[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have always used a grill for our favorite meats and have always wanted a smoker. I am so pleased we finally have it!! Masterbuilt is definitely the best choice by far.. We love the massive capacity and thay we can use charcoal for this model.. The flavor is by far is better than any grilling we have ever done.. We have already used it 3 times this week alone and I forsee us outside in extreme  cold for the entire winter as well..its just THAT awesome!! This is a beautiful  addition to our outdoor deck as well.. Now let's get to the awesome features.. I had no idea that any smoker would have Bluetooth  and an app to see and set temperature.. This is one of the coolest things ever.. the capacity is amazing and literally  could hold enough  food for a decent size party of people..there are several racks that can be adjusted to fit whatever you decide to smoke..we have used it for a few types of meat but also have added vegetables..corn on the cob..roasted potatoes..you name it..u can add it..everything tastes amazing..I cant rave enough  about it qnd I highly recommend  it to anyone  who loves food at all..

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Masterbuilt 40" Charcoal Smoker has all the features I need to smoke food without having to babysit it. I set the temperature, time and know I will have a good cook. From loading the charcoal basket and adding wood, easily starting the fire, to the finished product; it is now a fun experience, not a worrisome chore. 

I gave it a 5 star rating because, for the price, it is the only smoker I've ever owned, and I've owned several, that I know I will get the food done exactly to my taste consistently.

Two things I would like to see added are an inside light and a smokestack.

Otherwise, you can't beat it for the money

Easy To Use, Great Price

The smoker worked awesome.  Kept the proper temp for 6 hours.  Smoked my spare ribs by the 3-2-1 method.  My only complaint is that it only came with only 1 temperature probe but has capacity for 4 temperature meat probes.  Linked easily to my phone to control temperature.

Nice addition to my outdoor kitchen.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to smoking and charcoal so I know there is going to be a learning curve but I'm so excited to become an expert with this digital charcoal smoker! The smart features are super helpful for a beginner and also great for a pro!
Since assembly is a one time thing, it doesn't affect my rating. The directions were out of order (just read through and make sure you do the wiring before you flip it over instead of the order it shows in the manual). Also, my manual has upside down and missing pages. Not a big deal I made it work. It did take some banging and bending during assembly to get some of the holes and pieces lined up.
The box it was shipped in was in good shape but the cooking part of the smoker had some bent walls so either it was dropped pretty good during shipping or occured during packing. The doors are the heaviest part of the smoker. I was surprised the doors are so much beefier than the fire box or cooking box, which seems like thinner metal. It's thinner than my metal barrel type grill. The heavy doors are held on by hinges which are welded to the box. The hinge welds seem rough and I hope they last so the heavy doors don't fall and smash my toe one day. The fasteners to keep the doors closed are great and there is a mechanism in it that auto turns the fan off when either of the doors are open.
Now onto the cooking. Since I'm a beginner, I started with something easy and essentially used it as an oven. All at the same time I smoked pizza, blueberry dump cake, veggie foil packs, and jalapeno poppers. It was awesome and everything came out amazing! I definitely see myself using the smoker to prepare large meals when we have a crowd to feed. Although my recipes had the temperature set to 350, with everything in there, the smoker was only able to get to 300. I never put the tent in either. Everything was still cooked perfectly and tasted great. I wish the charcoal basket was more like a drawer on rollers of some sort because it is pretty hard to get it in and out when it is full with 10+ lbs of charcoal. Adding more charcoal during cooking isn't as quick as I'd like because you have to lift the basket up and over the ledge, slide it out to add more and then get it back in. It doesn't slide in and out easily.
The app could also use some improvements but fortunately, that can continually be improved with software updates. I didn't have any problems connecting the smoker to my wifi and phone. On the app there is an arrow next to the temperature. I thought this meant temperature rising since it's pointed up. However, even when the temperature is falling, the arrow stays up so just know that it doesn't mean anything. The fan auto turns off to keep the temperature constant. I kept getting Error 4 during the preheating (website shows this error means charcoal not lighting) so I had to keep a close eye on the charcoal during this process. There is never any indication that an error is occurring on the app - only on the smoker itself. No notification and even if I have the smoker on my screen, it doesn't show an error is happening at all. So just make sure you're around to check the smoker in person.
Overall, I'm super excited about learning how to smoke more things, including briskets, turkey, etc and the smart features will definitely help me learn quicker!! If I just had a charcoal smoker without the auto fan or temp gauge, I could see it being a disaster in the beginning but not with this thing! I got a full amazing meal on the first try!

Fun to Use!

Bought this unit brand new yesterday, Preseasoned it, fired it up this morning to smoke a turkey for Thanksgiving everything is warping fan works when it wants to, a huge piece of junk glad I wasted my money SMH
I have bought four electric smokers made by master built over the years and enjoyed them but wanted something bigger so I bought this I knew better.

Garbage

I bought this a month ago and have had a frustrating experience. First day was spent trying to complete the seasoning of the smoker to burn off any oil from the production process. The Bluetooth device would not stay connected to my phone no matter how close I stood. After finding another review with the same problem I test the application and made sure it connected over WiFi. That was much better. Another issue was error 0004, and 0005 would keep coming up. No explanation on what they mean, but 0004 you're able to clear by pressing the power button quickly. 0005 I was only able to clear by unplugging and starting over. If you're smoking a 20lb Thanksgiving turkey for about 10 hours that can be very frustrating.

When coals cool off there is no alarm for when the temp starts to drop so you have to constantly keep one eye on your temp. 

Coal basket is a pain. If you're smoking something for more than 3 hours then you're going to have to add charcoal. You don't want to cook over unlit coals so I still don't know the best way to add coals, have them burn till grey and then get the drawer in without taking over 30 minutes and the smoker cooling off. Maybe light your coals completely in a coal lighter tube then drop them in? Coal basket also warped after the first use from being hot and have to shake it to get it out. Even new it's not a drawer is a basket inside an ash catch pan so loaded down with 12lbs of hot coals is not the most fun to deal with. You can't just slide it out to slip in some fresh coals. You have to lift it out and balance it on the edge of the shelf and hope it doesn't fall out. You will need heat resistant gloves that go beyond the wrist. Clunky and hard to handle.

The water pan sits on the heat deflector. So if you are attempting to slide out the water pan to add water it knocks the heat deflector out of place them the water pan won't go in all the way. You have to pull the pan out and reset the deflector and set the water pan in place. You can't slide it in.

No troubleshooting information anywhere online or in the manual for issues with the digital controller. Not good.

Not insulated so you have to keep it 10 feet from everything. Walls, furniture, other grills. That just limits the amount of places you can put it in your backyard.

I got this knowing it would be more work than my small upright electric, but I don't think this was engineered by someone that smoked for more than an hour. 

I will be seeking a return, and will purchase a masterbuilt 40" electric, but this just wasn't thought out as much as I expected.

Very frustrating software that was not ready

I bought this 2 weeks ago and it did not work right out of the box. I've submitted a form online twice already and no one calls me back. Looks like this is my first and last Masterbuilt purchase!

Horrible quality. The door hinges were broken straight out of the box. Customer service is terrible, we were waiting on parts for months. Don't waste your time or money. skip this one.

Not worth it!!

Within 6 days rust had developed everywhere on the unit.  It was sitting under a roof, exterior was damaged on arrival because of the 1/16" sheet metal.  I bent the sheel into shape to use, since no replacement shell was shipped by Masterbuilt.  Constant error codes, wifi range is non-existent, no insulation or gasket on smoker, charcoal basket warped during required  burn-in.  Fan didn't regulate temperature at all.  Never reached the required burn-in temp.  It's cold here, the smoker can't maintain a temperature because it has zero insulation.

Masterbuilt actually said, "Rust can happen."  I've had the unit for 3 weeks now, never been able to use it and it's getting returned.  No fault of Walmart.  This was ordered online as a gift.  Poorly Built is an understatement for Masterbuilt.  Do yourself a favor and avoid this Brand, or give the money to someone who needs it.  You won't find happiness here.

"Rust can happen" -Masterbuilt

Smoker arrived with dent on side but that was not bad. Put it together and tried to do pre burn to clean unit and the digital control would shut off when trying to set temp. then after awhile the display stopped working completely and now does not work to check temp and fan has not worked since plugging in. Sent 2 complaints to Masterbuilt but don't have a clue if they even received it. Not happy with purchase and will not buy another.
