There are other video doorbells out there without subscription services required, but Eufy is part of the Anker family of products. Anker is a name I'm familiar with. Since I have had good luck with Anker's USB hubs, USB cables, and power cells I thought I'd give this a shot.
So far, so good. The setup was easy. The video quality is pretty good, not "cinema" quality, but good enough to recognize people at the edge of the detection range.
Initially, I had the doorbell notify me every time someone entered the detection area. It was cool to see delivery people drop off packages, but you also get alerts every time you leave and enter as well unless you put the unit to sleep first. I was getting 12 - 15 notifications a day and this caused the battery to drain fairly quickly. Since the notification feature isn't something I need all the time I leave it off until I do need it. The good thing about the detection area is it WORKS well. No false alarms from wildlife or people walking by just outside of the set detection area. Once I hardwire the unit so that it has a constant supply of power, I'll leave the detection feature on 24/7/365 again.
NOTE TO EUFY/ANKER: It would be useful if one could program when to have detection on and off to get more out of the battery and not sacrifice security. Remembering to turn it on and off is a hassle.
The app for your smartphone works well (at least the version for my phone does) and is intuitive. The app makes it is easy to manage your device settings and see who is at your door. YES, the app utilizes the internet to notify you and send you a video, but I can disable that feature and the videos are stored LOCALLY on the base unit, not in the cloud.
All that and no subscription fee or internet privacy concerns.
-----
I'm a big fan of the Eufy cameras (easy to install and setup, batteries last a long time, super easy to use app, video is stored locally and the cloud is an option not a requirement). So, when I saw the original Eufy wired doorbell I was happy to see the product. Unfortunately, due to the age of my house, wiring for a doorbell is not possible so I'm forced to have a battery-powered doorbell.
Since it came out, I've had a Ring Doorbell 2. It definitely does the job but, the longer I had it, the more I disliked it. The sensitivity of when the motion alerts were triggered varied widely no matter what adjustments you did. (People would be in front of the door with no motion alert but a car traveling on the street 20 feet away would send an alert.) Retrieving previously recorded alerts was always easy, but the recorded videos seemed to be a few seconds too late from when the event actually started. Watching live view never seemed to work (even with Ring Support help) even though my wifi access point was literally directly on the other side of the wall from where the doorbell was located and the Ring app showed a full strength wifi connection. The battery lifespan was quite good, but I did buy an additional battery to make sure the doorbell always had power at all time while another battery charged.
Once the Eufy battery doorbell was announced, I got it as soon as possible. Right out of the box, the first thing you'll notice is it's big. Much longer than a Ring doorbell and a bit thicker. This is not a slender subtle doorbell. Also, the doorbell has the battery sealed inside of it; no separate battery unit. I'm assuming the trade off is to have a longer lasting battery the unit must be bigger to accommodate the bigger battery. Since the doorbell is the battery, the way it's mounted is using a plastic tray that is secured to the wall, and then the doorbell attaches to the tray. With a Ring doorbell, even if you didn't have a battery in it, it still looked like there was a doorbell outside your door. If you removed the Eufy doorbell to charge it, it's just a empty tray.
Since I've only had the doorbell up for a short period, I'm not sure if it'll last the 180 days on one charge. Also, my concern is if the battery malfunctions, the entire camera unit becomes useless. With that said, with the other Eufy cameras I own, the battery life is pretty darn close to what they claim and charge very quickly. Also, the few times I've contacted Anker/Eufy, they've been extremely helpful. While I don't know about battery life, if Anker/Eufy is anything like they've been in the past, I'm not worried if I need help.
As for the video, it's noticeably sharper than Ring. Also, it starts recording a few moments earlier than Ring so you can see more activity before and after a typical Ring video clip. The EufySecurity app is hands-down more user-friendly and straight forward than the Ring app. Extremely simple, all feature controls are exactly where you think they would be, and you can download videos quickly and easily. Also, live view actually works. I realize the issues I had with live view on Ring could be due to issues that are unique to my circumstances, but to click to view a live image and it just works is really nice. Lastly, if you have other Eufy products connected to the app, I really appreciate how it shows everything in one page (and can be customized in what order you want to see things).
The video itself is locally stored in the Homebase. If you want cloud recording, Eufy will offer it to you but it's not required to use the doorbell. That means the video isn't on a server somewhere (with other companies having access to it) unless you agree to it. The more I read about what Ring could and does do with your video made me uneasy. I like knowing that the video literally "lives" at my home and it's up to me how it's shared.
The one thing Eufy doesn't have like Ring is the "Neighbors" component. Depending on what you are looking for and the neighborhood/area you live in, the Neighbors feature may or may not be helpful. For me, the majority of what was posted on it was not helpful (most people sharing video of wildlife in the yard). I haven't missed it at all.
