The only downside for me has been that sometimes it has been weirdly difficult to get it to wake up from sleep -- and it definitely does not like having the lid closed with a monitor plugged in while playing games, but honestly that's probably a good safety feature to keep me from melting things anyway. I am mildly suspicious that some of the issues might be due to the pre-installed vendor software ("myasus" + "armoury crate") but still very manageable. I was nervous about wiping the device with a fresh windows install given the secondary monitor and any special drivers it might need.
Very happy!!
I will lead with the drawbacks, but I actually really like how repairable/up gradable it has been and have that at the bottom
1.) To kick off with the most prominent, the second display. Honestly it is the biggest disappointment of the laptop being usable but not great. It suffers from two major MAJOR problems. First the hinge system while excellently made doesn't raise up the screen as much as you would think it does given the promotional images. The resulting viewing angle basically means you need to have it on your lap and and be sitting at a 90 degree angle to have it be actually useful. Its tragic really because there is still space for it to rise without it cutting off the main display. For the second display to even cover most of the lower bezel you need to push the main screen such that it is around 145 degrees from the keyboard at which point the main screen also starts being pointless.
The second issue with the display is the quality of it. I don't know what display tech they are using, but it has issues. I am unsure of what the technical term for describing it is, but it looks extremely...pixelated? The issue is that whenever you have any whites or other bright colors on the screen the individual pixels of the display becoming EXTREMELY apparent. The best comparison I can offer is whenever you get grease on a large display or it becomes really dirty is sort of how the display looks. The issue being with grease or dirt is that the individual pixels end up refracting and you end up seeing them more prominently. In fact when I first got the computer I ended up cleaning the second display several times because I thought that was the issue. So long as the image on the screen is dark it doesn't matter, but if you have a webpage open and aren't in dark mode, hoo boy it looks positively awful.
TLDR for this point is that the second screen doesn't raise enough to be useful, even though it could rise higher with a different mechanism. Also the second monitor feels pretty cheap with whatever tech they are using as it looks almost greasy on white/bright images.
2.) To fit in the second screen they compressed the keypad and the touchpad, and while the keyboard is actually perfectly usable, the touchpad isn't. In fact its a wonder they included a touchpad at all in my opinion. Although it may have been a bold decision I think removing the touchpad and stating upfront that you will need to purchase a mouse to go with it (or include a cheap one, I can find aftermarket mice for 30$, which is pennies when I am spending 2k+). If the argument against this is that there needs to be a hardware connected pointers for error cases I would say they could include that on the second display, since that also functions as a touch pad. The included space would then really let the keyboard breathe and would feel even better.
Alternatively they could increase laptop total size. I am paying for a gaming laptop, I don't really care about it not be the most portable thing ever, so long as I don't need to actually disassemble my main PC.
TLDR: The touchpad is way more unusable than you would think and a net negative for the design when there are other alternative solutions including just saying that you will need an external mouse.
Finally the best positive thing I can say about this is how easily upgrade-able it has been. When I was looking into these laptops I found a disassembly guide on the previous iteration of the DUO and they stated that one of the RAM sticks had been soldered in. So I was pleasantly surprised when I went to upgrade my ram that not only was it not soldered in, it was one of the easiest laptop RAM switches I have ever performed. the two slots were layered on top of each other and held in place by some solid clips. Kudos ASUS!
Furthermore on this note, accessing the laptop internals was super straightforward with one small (but very annoying exception). To pull the backplate off you just need to take out several very obvious screws, one not obvious at all screw, and then run a pick around the edge to pop the clips out.
The not at all obvious screw was the annoyance in find it. Right in the center of the board there is a small rubber gromit covering the screw hole. This would not be annoying if all the others were also covered, but since there isn't I ended up pull having the slowly tug at the thing to try to figure out where the last screw was.
