It was a toss up between buying this NAS or the Synology 220+. QNAP was running a promotion where these NAS where only $239 which is just about $100 cheaper than the MSRP.I noticed the only ones that were on sale were the every so slightly older models with the J4005 chip boosting to 2.7GHz. It was still a fine choice and is why I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and it was the model with the slightly newer J4025 chip which boosts to 2.9GHz. Getting a slightly better object than anticipated is always a plus.I bought the 2gb model and ordered a 8gb (2x4gb) kit off of Amazon from Timetec (CL17, 2400) and it has been working great. My unit, now fully operational, uses just over 2gb of RAM and would clearly bottle neck if having any other operations running. At the moment I am running Homebridge & PiHole.I populated both drives with 2TB WD Red Plus Drives. I ran these in a RAID 1 setup which mean both drives will have duplicate information on them so if one drive fails no data will be lost. Once all setup only about 1.5TB is actually usable.Last but not least it is very clear that QNAP has issues with ransomware. If you're not too familiar with this please do some due diligence and search for "QNAP Deadbolt" and ensure you protect yourself. I don't run any of the cloud features and keep my device only accessible to my LAN and if need access while away I'll use a VPN to get into my network.
