BenQ ScreenBar Computer Monitor Light Unboxing
Digital David
Product Description
The light usually flashes when Halo’s power supply (output is less than 5V/1.3A) is insufficient. Please change to another USB port of devices or USB adapter in which the power supply with an output voltage of at least 5V and a current of 1.3A or above. We recommend using a power supply with an output voltage of 5V and a current of 1.5A or above to optimize the lamp’s light. If you are unsure about the output information of your USB devices, we recommend using a USB adapter on ScreenBar Halo directly. And before using a USB adapter, please have a look at your USB adapter specification for output information. You can find related output information shown on the USB adapter below: OUTPUT: 5V ⎓ 1.5A Please DO NOT use the USB extension cable for ScreenBar Halo. It will cause light flashes or abnormal operations as well.ScreenBar Plus is a revolutionary lighting system. Simply hang it on your monitor to light up your desk without taking up any valuable space. The Desktop Dial makes the use even easier. With automatic dimming and asymmetric optical design, ScreenBar Plus illuminates the working space with just USB power, avoiding reflective glare off your computer screen. Slick, clean, office working, editing, designing, home office.

As far as function… what a well thought out product that solves a persistent problem: PROPER lighting. It doesn’t only illuminate but let’s you choose what KIND of light you want. A push of the control knob turns it on. Simple enough. Rotate the dial and it’s a dimmer. Nice feature but not exactly groundbreaking, I know. BUT…. push the knob again and rotate the dial. This changes the light over a very broad spectrum from ice cool to very warm. I can literally feel the strain being relieved from my eyes as I dial in what I need for that particular sitting as I’m working. So it’s not just “one” kind of light. It’s many lights in one and is easily and quickly customized for your needs.
I was leery of the price and was tempted to just get a regular, inexpensive desk lamp. But I’ll be honest, this light is one of my favorite parts of my set up. So if you want a polished, professional looking, highly useful and fictional lighting solution that is also a space saver, you won’t regret this buy.
The light has a lot oof good qualities. It's portable to move from work space to work space. The control knob works perfect and at the size of a mouse makes it easy to stay out of the way. No glare and has good brightness. I could use a little more brightness but most people wouldn't, bottom line...its bright.
I run Imac 27 inch monitors and they have sensors that adjust brightness of the display related to the light in the room. So I had to adjust the brightness of the monitors with the lights on and turn off the sensors making the monitors static. Not a big deal just something needed to adjust when using this light if your monitors have light sensors. Finally they don't cover the camera on my Imac's or when I put it on my Thunderbolt monitor.
Benq is a little pricey but I love it. I actually bought another one so I can mount it on one of my other monitors. This will completely light up my 6 foot by 5.5 foot "L" shaped desk.
So for me I love that its minimalistic and fires out great light.. The set up is easy and I like the fact that I don't need another power outlet.
I first saw a review for the BenQ desk lamp which people praised but I did not want a lamp taking up desk space. Then I saw the link for this one, the BenQ e-Reading that sits on your monitor, and decided to order it. I have no regrets. It's well worth the price. I purchased the version with the dial which allows you to turn the light on and off, adjust brightness, adjust temperature, and toggle auto-adjust on/off where the light sets the temperature automatically based on the room. The censor for this is on the dial.
The light itself does everything I want. It provides plenty of light for video calls on my Mac or when reading books or taking notes. It can be rotated to make sure the light is not shining or reflecting off the monitor screen, only emitting away from the monitor. The counterweight the light bar snaps into lets you adjust the exact position of it sits on the top of the monitor. By default when you set it on top of the LG monitor it looks like it's barely covering the LG's camera, but I was able to make the adjustment so it now sits above the camera and does not get in the way. I have a small non-powered Belkin USB-C hub connected to one of the USB-C ports on the back of the LG. The Blekin has two USB-C and two regular USB ports. The BenQ connect to the Belkin which provides power.
The whole package, dial included, looks elegant and feels sturdy. This was the magic bullet that solved my problem and I'm very happy with it. I would recommend it over a desk lamp. You get all the light you need without it reflecting off the monitor screen and you're not taking up precious desk space.

Just to clear up some errors I've seen in other reviews:
-Yes, you can turn the light on and off with the controller-make sure to take out the protective cardboard from the controller knob.
-Yes, you can power the light on and off independently from your computer power. Get a separate USB power supply (cheap) and you don't need your computer power.
-There are numerous brightness and colour temperature settings, not just a few
-You can place your webcam on top of the light mount (or at least the logitech 920/922)
-Yes, you can use a USB extension cable to plug into a power source beyond the length of the supplied cable. I'm using the Amazon Basics 2.0 6.5 ft cable and it works well. That is a high-quality cable - some are thin and maybe can't properly handle the 5w.
PS ~ we both have Benq monitors as well.
However, since getting it I have used it every time I am at my computer desk. Great features to change light temperature and get's perfectly bright or dim enough for my room. Ambient light sensor is a cherry on top, and I've been satisfied with letting it auto adjust from day 1.
