The 48"W is the total with of unit once assembled. The 36"W is the measurement of the shelf space not including the poles.

The answer by Kalixt suggests that the poles make up 12" of additional width in total, or 6" per pole measured across the shelf. I have a similar 36"W shelf and the poles are 1.5" in diameter, and if you look at the picture of the shelf in the ad, the poles are certainly not 6" wide. This answer doesn't make sense. I bought this shelf and immediately returned it without even opening the box because I expected a 48" wide shelf, and the box itself wasn't big enough to contain a 48" wide shelf. A more proper explanation is that describing the shelf as 48"wide is wrong because it's really only 36" wide. Whoever is responsible for the ad for this shelf needs to fact-check the ad and then correct it.

You will receive a 36x18x72 shelf regardless of the info listed in the name of the item.

Don&#39;t try and rationalize why they put 48&quot;. They flat out misrepresented this item in the title. The item you get is titled &quot;Sandusky 36&quot;W x 18&quot;D x 72&quot;H Five-Shelf Resin Shelving&quot;. It appears this has been misleading for 1.5 two 2 years now.

I never saw it advertised as a 48&quot; unit but that is unfortunate that Walmart messed up dimensions in the heading.

I love this product and I will be purchasing again

The injection molding is horrible! It requires trimming of all the pieces. Also you must put your entire body weight into securing the shelves to the post. However, once assembled they do work but for the price I shouldn't have to do any cutting or fitting. The ones homedepot sell have much better quality control.
