As many others have done in the past, I bought this Echo Show so that I could video call with my father, who lives many thousands of miles away. Previous attempts at video calls via Zoom and Google were very frustrating for him. He’s quite tech-savvy, but 90 years old, so the simpler something can be, the better. My dad was given an Echo Show by my sister, but he hadn’t really done much with it. When I saw how relatively cheap the Echo Show original 5” version is now, I figured I’d give it a try.Quite to my surprise, it worked like a charm. I am able to call my dad with a simple voice command, and he can likewise call me. No more frustration and accompanying fruity language!I had previously read some negative reviews of the Echo Show (screen too small, sound no good, etc.) but I have found it to be a little gem. The small screen is actually a benefit to me, as the device doesn’t take up too much space on my already crowded desk. As for audio, mine is plugged into a decent sound system, so I’m getting great audio, but even without this assistance the Echo Show sounds pretty darn good. How do I know? I purchased another Echo Show for my wife, so impressed was I with the first one. She first used it as a glorified bedside alarm, but is doing more and more with it every day as she becomes more familiar with it and I set up more automation. Of course, new skills are constantly being developed, so there’s always something new to try.Would I use it to watch the new Bond film? No. I have a TV for that. But video clips from YouTube—absolutely. Spotify? Sounds great, even with just the built-in speaker. In summary, at this price, the Echo Show is a multi-talented bargain!

As many others have done in the past, I bought this Echo Show so that I could video call with my father, who lives many thousands of miles away. I set have this little Echo Show 5 replaces my older Echo Dot and sits on a shelf to one side of the monitor at my desk. It has reasonably good sound quality for the price -- about the same as a 3rd Gen Echo Dot -- works well for person-to-person (not multi-way) videoconferencing with other Echo Show and Kindle/Android/iPhone users (if they have the Alexa app loaded), will show movies and other video content available through Amazon Prime and can be set up to rotate through images of classic art work, family photos, news articles, calendar reminders and more, and still does all the cool things a regular Echo does.
Just one caution on the sound. The Show 5 has acceptable sound quality for most people, and it's perfect for my little home office, but my mother's Echo Show 8 puts out much better sound quality. If you like the video features of the Echo Show line but sound quality is important to you, you might consider moving up to the Echo Show 8 or top-of-the-line 10.
My only quibble with the Echo Show line is they don't come with a stand, and I needed a stand to get the show so it would point toward me at my desk while sitting on a shelf at about eye-level. Amazon sells several different stands, but none of them were to my liking and I wound up downloading a stand from Thingiverse, printing it on my 3D printer, adding a couple strong magnets (needed to hold the two together), and screwing the mount onto the shelf to keep it stable.
Do I recommend the Echo Show 5? Yes. I like the Echo Show feature set and chose the Echo Show 5 over the Echo Show 8 because it fits my office space better than the larger unit.
I will start off by saying I was super skeptical about purchasing an echo of any kind due to the frequency in which I use Siri on my iPhone I assumed I just wouldn’t use Alexa, I was super wrong. First the price on this thing you can not beat for everything it does, also I never would have known it was refurbished so saved some money there on what was already a super deal. The difference between an echo dot which is what I set out looking at and this which has a screen and does video calling and a million other cool things is unbelievable, I mean this was like $20 more or something crazy and for what it does compared to the dot, come on. I’m sure the dot is cool but the show is where it’s at. I now want to buy a show for every room in my house and probably will. The speaker is surprisingly really good and gets much louder than expected. The screen is really nice picture quality. I have to say my favorite part was something I didn’t notice was a problem I so often dealt with, apparently I was having to repeat myself when I would ask Siri things on my iPad and iPhone literally all the time! I mean over and over again I would have to repeat myself I knew it was often but it wasn’t until I got this and had Alexa be SOO RESPONSIVE and hear me EVERY TIME the first time that I realized what a constant problem that was for me. I can’t recommend this product more highly I am still finding all sorts of great things it can do and have been nothing short of blown away by this thing. I use the timer, calendar, reminders, and have it read me my notifications and emails all the time. It tells me when to expect my shipments from amazon which I get almost daily, it plays the music my kids want to hear and you can watch YouTube videos on it which for them is great. IT controls my tv which has a fire stick and even plays me sleep sounds to fall asleep to. I could go on about this thing all day but if I were you I’d just try it and I promise you will LOVE IT!! 10 stars!! One of my favorite things I’ve ever bought literally anywhere not just on Amazon.
Voice recognition really does not function well, so my advice is don't bother, Echo can't tell the difference between myself, my roommate, my mother, or my brother... and none of us sound alike.
Other than that, I really liked it. Originally purchased for my elderly mother so she could face time with my brother, but she found it confusing and went back to the original echo puck. I purchased another for my brother and one for his in-laws so we could all communicate. Nice gift for someone who has a child/pet at home and wants to monitor them, or for communication. Makes a nice baby monitor too.
