Basically a good product. However, this is my second purchase and both tend to loose settings such as: speed might change to calories when the unit is turned on. The first unit worked for several years before it was very difficult to keep any settings during the ride. My new unit seems to be very good. Only a couple of re-settings have been necessary. All in all, the Garmin 800 is well worth the money. I found that after 10 rides you should delete the ride data from the unit. I read about excess data storage problems. My Garmin was packaged very well in a Garmin box with no signs of damage at all. So far satisfied.

For me, all the health related stuff gets in the way of "easy to use". It's probably a good value for what you get, but I don't need extras. I took it out first time and it found satellites almost immediately, but the next time, it was slow and wouldn't update when I moved it around. I bought it specifically to use on a motorcycle and not a pedal bicycle. It appears to be an outdated model, which in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but there wasn't even an offer to sell me a way to mount it on a bike. As far as taking it out and actually navigating with it, I haven't done that yet, so I still have an open mind as to its value. I think it might get better with use.

I upgraded from the Edge 305 to the 800 to be able to map/route my ride as well as gather all the statistics that the 305 already gathered. Garmin does an excellent job thinking things through in their design. Like the 305 - the 800 allows you to modify the display and - show the fields you want to see. This unit also displays temperature which is helpful. The display is good when on the standard fields. In the sun - it's a bit reflective when on the map display but - not horrible by any means. The touchscreen capability is the likely compromise for this (which works very well by the way). What I don't like about it is the standard base map that comes with it. Garmin is renowned for 'bundling' their stuff to squeeze every penny out of you. This unit comes with a 'base map'. Well - I've purchased other garmins before and - I assumed (my fault honestly) that that mean it came with citynavigator (which is what I would have considered a base map). Nope... not unless you buy it in the bundle. So - the map it comes with is just a useless POS that doesn't allow routing. That's my major issue with it (which isn't really the unit but - Garmin's 2-step around how to get some extra money out of you). Garmin is the standard for cycling GPS's. Hard to beat and - nothing compares (likely the reason they feel they can charge so much for everything else - i.e. maps etc). Still - if you're serious and - want a good unit - this is it. You can look on like for OSM maps (free).Read full review
I use my 800 for tracking performance and do not utilize the extra functions of HR, etc. The display is large enough to see while cycling and the several screens can easily be stepped through on the road. Though I have not yet tried, I believe it would be easy to follow an uploaded route. Using it for navigation like you would Google Maps on a smartphone would be frustrating though. Overall I am pleased with my purchase and feel it was a good value. The wifi interface on the 810 would be a significant upgrade, but not worth the extra cost for me.

A most excellent product. A logarithmic upgrade from my elderly Edge 305. I love and use virtually all the extra fields and data this little guy provides. Scrolling thru the pages is simple and elegant. My only quibble is the map feature. It shows where you are and what is coming up so my group ride depends on me for guidance when we are riding in unfamiliar territory. However, I'm not too impressed with the "return to start" feature at this point. But that may just be me as the device is still relatively new. I was a tad disappointed to find that this receiver did not come with the City Navigator maps bundled. I had to buy an SD microchip with City Navigator from eBay. It makes a huge difference and I recommend that anybody who buys this item spring for the maps to bring this up to its full potential.Read full review
