4 of 5 Great camera - but there's a catch for web use... Wednesday, July 02, 2008 Mark from Ft. Lauderdale, FL
I researched cameras on and off for several months. Let me say that this camera definitely hit the mark by its price matched with all its features. It has two-way audio, can see almost an entire circle (like 330 degrees), and the software interface for it (browser-based) is pretty good, especially since it give you two zones to define for detecting movement in the camera's view.
ONE COMPLAINT... the key feature I was seeking I did not get -- INTERNET VIEWING! If you have a static IP address, then you're all set. But if your IP is dynamic, as is the case with most DSL and even some cable users without paying the ISP more money, then you have a problem.
There are third-party solutions out there. I had to write my own, but fortunately I'm a programmer. Many of you out there who want to be able to monitor their home/office/etc while away will want to look at other brands such as Panasonic. Panasonic comes with a free service for viewing your camera(s) online. This is something I think TrendNet should offer, especially since it promotes this camera as an "Internet camera". It's a bit misleading. The support for the camera was very slow in coming (two days to get a response) and when I did hear from them, they tersely told me a "no go" on using with dynamic IP and didn't offer much help. Again, this is a good camera for what it does, but for Internet viewing while away from its location, consider other brands. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 422w is not too bad Monday, June 23, 2008 A Customer from florida
right out of the box i was able to run throught the setup and get it up and running, even the wireless was easy to setup. where it gets complicated is the email/ftp forwarding of pictures and remote access, you need experience with your router's webpage and making modifications. i have verizon fios and it took some time to get the email/ftp to work correctly. overall this is a decent camera for the price, images are relatively clear and the night function is good, i can see clearly across the room and the motion activation works great. 5 of 5 Great indoor camera Saturday, June 07, 2008 A Customer from Gulf Coast TX
Got this a few days ago. Very easy to configure. Had mine set up on my wireless network in minutes. Much better video quality than I expected for this price.
Definitely meant to be used indoors in low light. When I point it out the window, the image just washes out and goes all white. But indoors, with normal lighting, the image is great. Night time image is very good. The built-in IR LEDs work well to about 20ft or so. Beyond that, things are pretty dark. I tried an experiment and turned on a desk lamp with a very low power fluorescent bulb and the camera had enough light to see everything in the house in full color. Really good low light performance.
The microphone is also very sensitive. Almost too sensitive. It picks up every sound in the house. I can hear the ceiling fan, air conditioner, TV in another room, people talking in other rooms etc. Has 2-way audio but haven't tried it yet.
Super easy to operate. You don't need any special software to remotely view, just Internet Explorer. You can view with Firefox, but you lose some features. When viewing remotely over the Internet, you can click on any point in the image and the camera centers itself on that point.
Tons more options and features but, you can read about them on the manufacturers website.
If this had a true optical zoom, it would be just about perfect but, full Pan Tilt and Zoom cameras cost a lot more than this one.
Overall, very pleased with this camera. Was this review helpful?
