Great unit. Easy interface and simple address entry. Everything needed is included. You must go to Garmin's site and update the firmware and get the latest maps (2009). Bluetooth for handsfree cellphone is super - speaker is clear and volume is good over road noise. Driving directions are accurate and fast. Speech and enuciation is better than any I have heard. Would have liked more data; (lat-lon, course, and speed, etc.) but probably good not to have it - a distraction while driving. mp3 is not that good but didn't buy unit for music. 5 of 5 Easy to use Wednesday, August 27, 2008 grandgorilla from NH
This is easy to use, set up took no time at all. Love the bluetooth for hands free calling and traffic reports. I could write more but I agree with the other reviews. Great buy. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Garmin 550 is a good product Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Jogi from Hagerstown, MD
Garmin 550 GPS works well with the GPS technology. Maps that come pre loaded is NA 2008 version and one can get the free update of NA 2009. There are some issues with the maps though they give faulty directions when locating at un popular places like driving through the farms, country side driving in PA etc....
Bluetooth has compatibality only with few make and models. I have the LG Rumor phone and it is not compatiable, caution when buying this GPS make sure you have a compatiable phone if you want to use it with GPS else you will face problems in receptions, calls dropped, etc...
GPS is easy to use and I think it does pretty good job as far as the GPS technology is to be valuated. Overall I think it is a good product and I recommend others to buy. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent product, excellent service! Monday, August 25, 2008 BKD from Corpus Christi, Texas
Recieved the order much sooner than expected, within 3 days after ordering it. Device is easy to operate and use. Exactly what I needed for out of town trips and locating homes in town without driving all over using a wrinkled map with tiny print. Have already recommended to a number of friends contemplating purchasing a GPS system. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great GPS Saturday, August 23, 2008 Nanbarton@cox.net from Las Vegas, NV
I have been a garmin fan for awhile now and had a previous model suddenly stop working, I panicked and bought a Nuvi but found I really didn't care for it. Too small print, just not the same as my C330.
I found this model the C550 and from the reviews decided to try it. Great price and for $100 less than the Nuvi I ended up with lots of extras, the bluetooth phone link works wonderfully, great larger print and less fingerprints which seemed much more obvious on the Nuvi. Works great.
It does seem slightly slower at picking up original signal (meaning slightly over a minute:) very workable especially with the bluetooth. Still playing with all the extras. Great device.
It even notified me of a wreck 7 miles away yesterday, hmmm didn't think it even had traffic watch and I definitely haven't paid for that option, have to watch that. For now definitely thrilled.

4 of 5 Right pricepoint, decent maps... Saturday, August 23, 2008 Joe from Idaho
The price of this unit is quite reasonable, and it is incredibly intuitive to operate (literally anyone can operate this GPS). Downloading updates was simple. The only grief I have is the maps could be updated periodically by Garmin (some streets are 5 years old and not on the map), and an annoying glitch where the unit (while navigating you someplace) says "in 500 feet turn right on 5th street, then turn right..." When it should only have said "in 500 feet turnright on 5th street...".
All in all a great unit for the price. I bought my wife one and my father in law one as well. Obviously I feel they are the best deal out there.
I really enjoy the ease of use of the bluetooth function as well. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 much better than older models Saturday, August 23, 2008 A Customer from pensacola florida
much more user friendly than older models, much faster, only downside is the phone bluetooth picks up road noise at highway speeds, bluetooth works well if you have a quiet car, suction cup mounts never work with any unit, overall great unit, would buy again at this price Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 My wife can even use the c550! Tuesday, August 19, 2008 Tom Barker from Webster, NY
We have owned a small, portable Garmin GPS for over 4 years. It cost over $400 and did not have all the maps included. The c550 was complete and was under $165. Here's the best part. My wife as unable to use the previous GPS to navigate, however she set up the c550 without even asking me how to do it and without even reading any instruction book! It is that simple. Plus it got us to our destination and made the ride fun.
It's a winner! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Garmin c550 Tuesday, August 19, 2008 A Customer from St Louis MO
I am very satisfied with the Garmin c550. It works as promised and it has already saved me mileage when looking for a specific location. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good GPS for the price Monday, August 18, 2008 LB from Acton, MA
This GPS is the older style but had all the features I wanted and was a great price. I had been using a Magellan until now that stops working in warm weather (since I was beyond my 90-day, Magellan told me there was nothing they could do). So I chose a Garmin. Overall I really like this GPS and it is very easy to use BUT I am disappointed in how long it takes to find the signal for each trip and that when choosing a location it show the distance as the crow flies and not actual trip distance. Also, during a trip you only see the distance until the next turn and you have to keep pressing the buttons to find the entire distance for the trip.
Bluetooth was easy to set up but I am told that the sound it not good (sounds good on my end) and it makes it much easier to answer a call while driving. Sometimes it will not let me switch the call to my phone. I have to turn off the GPS and call back in order to use my phone.
Updates were easy. It is really nice that if you shut off the car but are not at your destination it will pick up where you left off when you start the car again.
Traffic features does not seem that great (comes free for 90 days) and I have been sitting in traffic several times but it is not shown on the traffic for the Garmin. I was hoping this feature would be compelling :) Overall I am happy and would recommend this GPS.

5 of 5 Excellent Saturday, August 16, 2008 A Customer from Cleveland, Oh
Thinking about buying another for our other car. The Bluetooth doesn't come through with great quality, but other than that, GPS is fantastic. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Love it! Saturday, August 16, 2008 A Customer from Stafford, VA
I bought this gps for my parents because I have had one for over a year and I love it. It is extremely easy to use and has never gotten us lost! We have taken it on several trips around the country and have never had any problems with it. It recalculates routes very quickly as compared to some other gps models that I have encountered. 5 of 5 A terrific GPS unit Thursday, August 14, 2008 Mike from Mays Landing, NJ
This unit is extremely easy to operate and use. It performs so well I am amazed every time I put it to use. Love the way that it lays out directions and when you take a turn not in unit it recalculates your directions immediately.
Only problem I had was trying to load music from Itunes. Must change format and ran into a little problem with this. I did not really need the music download. I purchased a recertified unit and it arrived and I could not tell any difference from a brand new unit. Totally satisfied with purchase and Buy.com price and delivery. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Terrific GPs Monday, August 11, 2008 A Customer from Woodbury Hts., NJ
This is my second GPS after a brief stint with a Garmin 200. I have now owned this unit for 3 weeks and I love it. The update to the 2009 map went without a glitch although the whole process took almost all of two hours. I have lived in my area for 18 years and this GPS has shown me new backroads that I do not know about. I believe it has saved me time & gas money. It should pay for itself over time. I also love its bluetooth capability. It paired with my motorola RAZR cell phone right away. The windshield suction mount so far has held tight. I highly recommend this GPS. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 love it Saturday, August 09, 2008 ameripro02@yahoo.com from Holland, NY
I received mine and read the directions right away and was not sure how to use a gps but it was so easy you just plug it in to your car and follow the simple directions for the settings and you are ready to go, i love the fact that it has the blue tooth on it i have it on all the time for that while driving even if i dont need directions just for the bluetooth feature, and it will show upcoming roads on the map and it stops the guessing of not sure which intersection you are approaching, i would recommend this gps. 5 of 5 Great GPS purchase Wednesday, August 06, 2008 Steven from Orlando, FL
This is our first GPS, which I bought for my wife, and she absolute loves it. For the few weeks it has been in use it has been accurate and very easy to use. It has bluetooth connectivity and it is constantly used by her. It sounds clear on both ends of the phone converstation and the unit is very intuitive. Garmin has discontinued the model, even though it still supports with updates on-line.
Another great purchase from BUY.COM. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Completely satisfied Wednesday, August 06, 2008 Animesh from San Jose, CA
I bought this product 15 days ago, this device has everything one needs in a GPS. It has text to speech ability, which allows you to drive without looking at screen. It also has MP3 which is really cool thing, when turn comes, songs stop and it speaks the direction. I have made a good investment in purchasing this GPS. I totally rely on it and love it so far... 5 of 5 Great Product!!! Great Price!!! Wednesday, August 06, 2008 Mike from Lakewood, CA
I have never owned a GPS unit before, and I'm the type to research forever before buying an expensive product. After reading hundreds of consumer and even professional reviews, I went for the C550. What pushed me over the edge to buy this one instead of the flat screen Nuvi was the price. For $170, it's amazing! I actually like that it's not a flat screen because I can set it anywhere in my car without the need of a stand. My wife used it for an all girls weekend and pushed the POI function to the limit. It found everything they were looking for (unfortunately!). The only downside to the unit I've found is that occasionally it takes a few minutes for it to acquire the satellite signal. But since I'm not a superhero looking to jump in my car and speed off, it works just fine for me. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a GPS unit at a great price. 4 of 5 Great gps- failure on bluetooth Wednesday, August 06, 2008 kurt from nh
Came from a c340 - this is an excellent gps and works well for that purpose. If this was just intented to be that way it would be a 5 across the board. My problem is the bluetooth handsfree - its prettymuch useless. The sound quality is terrible and honestly it blanks out the call so much (even in a silent and stopped car) I stopped using it. Everyone tells me I sound as if I am in an underwater tin can(just as they come across to me)
The only reason I upgraded from my c340 to this is for the bluetooth so I am sadly disappointed in that. I hope to god using the external microphone port makes things a little better. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 OUTSTANDING!!! Tuesday, August 05, 2008 KyTom from South Central Ky.
This is SOOOO easy to use. I downloaded the updated maps from Garmin.com, (if you do this, it takes about 5 hours). Anyway, have used it for 2 trips, outstanding performance. The roadwork detour worked flawlessly. One of the best investments I have ever made..... Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Unit Tuesday, August 05, 2008 A Customer from Palm Coast, Florida
I upgraded from a Garmin C340, and this C550 is much improved. The screen is brighter to make it easier to see in sunlight and the unit locks in the satellites much quicker.
The bluetooth capability is REALLY nice too; didn't think I would like it as much as I do.
Only downside... I don't like the ball and socket connection between the unit and the mount. I think it might become too loose to hold position eventually. I liked the rocker system used by the C340 much better. Was this review helpful?
