Firmware issue

I like the drive and like many geeks, I checked the Sony Storage Website for firmware update. I updated the firmware from v1.0a to 1.0d. After this, my computer would not recognize the drive. I called Sony and was asked 'did we tell you to upgrade the firmware?' I was told that I should not have updated firmware and if I did and the drive became useless, I was out of luck. I switched the SATA cable to another connector on my mobo and I did get it to work. This whole firmware 'don't update' issue is frustrating as I have always updated my other optical drives without issue. More and More I find that companies are releasing firmware updates and then scolding you when you use them. I got the same scolding from Samsung when I upgraded my firmware on my LCDTV and they told me the were not liable for any damage from the update. What gives?

Decent drive if you're looking to play Blu-ray movies on your PC

I was glad that it's working as expected. The drive is a bit longer than my DVD burner so I had to switch my SATA cables around and tied everything back together . I also had to switched the factory faceplate to a standard size one. Fortunately it was included. I was hoping that it could also burn CD/DVD but it's just a BD-ROM. So if you're looking for an inexpensive plain-Jane Blu-ray player, this is it.

I would recommend upgrading the firmware and purchasing anydvdhd. It removes some of the protection junk on the blurays that make them get jammed up. And my boot times have gotten quicker since the firmware. If your using your computer as a media centeri would recommend getting a dedicated sound card with fiber optic out for surround sound.
