Just bought this phone taking i back today

I purchased this phone and let it charge up. I programmed it and finally got to use it last night. There was a fuss sound in the reciever no matter how close I was to the base. I also had a hard time hearing on speaker phone and off speaker phone.
I willreturn today and try something else..
Maybe I am just lossing my hearing??

I love having a large base type phone for ease in typing in numbers on menus but this one is a joke because the cord is too short/tight. The handsets don't stay charged very long and the answering machine won't totally erase all the messages. The answering machine greeting doesn't stay on either for some reason. I get calls complaining that I don't have a greeting so I re-record it. I usually like GE but my last set wore out on the cordless phone because of having to hit the #1 & 2 buttons to answer menusquestions.

The base unit is very lightweight, so when you pick up the receiver the entire base slides towards you. Handsets will not erase the message 'Message Waiting', even if you have checked the messages. It is very difficult to hear a conversation, even if you turn up the volume to the max. When I am using the phone and my husband picks up the handset to join the conversation, there is a loud squeel for 2 seconds to alert everyone. This is very annoying! The operations manual is not helpful and the 800 number refers you to a toll-call number for assistance. GE dropped the ball with this one. We threw away the packaging before the handsets were charged and cannot send it back.
