A nice choice for budding backyard astronomers who want to get a closer look at the night sky, the Meade Saturn 60EQ-DO telescope features a 60mm, 3x Barlow lens that makes faraway celestial objects appear razor sharp. The three eyepieces, meanwhile (SR4mm, H12.5mm, and H25mm), cover a host of observational conditions, with variations to cover how much eye relief you need, the desired field of view, and the sky's current outlook. The focal length of 900mm (with an f/15 ratio) isn't as robust as many higher-powered telescopes, but is still solid. All of this on a fully adjustable aluminum tripod (with an accessory tray) that gives you a stable viewing platform with minimal vibration (the bane of telescopes everywhere). The tripod also boasts a fluid motion control system--with slow motion controls on both axes--for easy tracking. Other details include a 5x24mm viewfinder (with a six-point bracket) and a 0.965-inch diagonal mirror.
The telescope also comes with Meade's SpaceExplorer PC-compatible software, which boasts a database of more than 10,000 celestial objects. The application offers an ideal way to virtually explore the heavens before looking through the telescope's eyepiece and finding the real planets, galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. The software also includes detailed star charts for printing, along with easy-to-use Microsoft Windows pulldown menus and online help.
The Saturn 60EQ-DO telescope is backed by a one-year warranty.
