As far as gameplay, I've only played GTA 3 as I'll be going through them in order, but IMO, it holds up very well. Aside from one other time booting up my ps2 and playing it briefly about 8 years ago, this was the first time really playing through the game again. The game is still fun, funny, and outrageous in it's simplicity. Yes, I forgot how cumbersome some of the missions were, which prompted me to bust out the cheats again, but overall I can see why, this was the first games that had me log as many hours in a game.
No other game prior to this held or peaked my interest. Even today, I feel the magic of just messing around and driving around the world is still fun. Looking back or at least where graphics are today, the violence is almost cartoony and more slapstick. I don't mind the graphics and if you think these are bad, go back and watch some old ps2 gameplay footage. Personally, I wouldn't enjoy it as much if it has a major overhaul or remake. One big but weird con though is that there's no exhaust coming out of the cars. I know that's an odd thing to point out, but I always loved that in the original. Not sure though if that's the case in Vice or SA.
Yes, the explicit content and writing is there, which at this point in my life I try to avoid, but there's way worse stuff that's mainstream in our culture today. But still, not something I'd let my kids play or see.
It's also so amazing how replaying this game literally feels like you're traveling back in time to another era of a more simpler time.
That being said if you didn't play these games back when they first came out this might not be what you were expecting. If you were hoping for a "GTA 5" level overhaul of these games this collection isn't it. These games are updates of the original games for new consoles. Texture resolution has been increased, models have been given more polygons, sounds have been updated where possible, the lighting is "improved" (I think so), and loading between islands has been removed. Beyond that these games are almost exactly the same underneath, both good and bad, and as a result play very similar to the originals. Even the "loading hiccups" appear to occur in the same places, they're that much of a port.
This heavily ported feeling is great if you want to relive nostalgia or feel what it was like 20 years ago (ya it's been that long). Cars will drive the same, physics are still just as ridiculous, and walking is still just as clunky as you remember. Some quality of life improvements have been made, mainly with the RC missions, but beyond minor changes it feels the same.
If you're walking into this expecting GTA 5 this will be frustrating. Back when these games came out they were known just as much for their quirks as their gameplay and to fully enjoy them you must embrace the quirks. These games are buggy, will crash, will do weird stuff, and you'll need to save often. It's just the nature of the beast when it comes to first gen 3D GTA games and these games are very much first gen games with a new coat of paint.
Framerate really does need to improve and they need to iron out weirdness like traffic in the airport in VC but as of time of review so far these haven't been game breaking or kept me from completing missions. VC has crashed on me twice so far and does appear to be more likely to crash the longer it runs. I'm guessing there's a lot of memory leak errors here so save and restart the game every few hours.
So should you buy this collection? If you're looking to play some old GTA on your Switch and can handle some framerate issues and new glitches I'd say yes. If you're looking for "modern GTA but it's GTA3/VC/SA" then no.
